Or adding a 1/4 size flint under your current flint to give the spring a little more pressure. You might try pulling the wick out another half millimeter. If it gets fouled by water, rust, diesel, etc and can’t be cleaned or isn’t worth the time, you can use zippo replacement.Īs for the strike wheel, 2-3 times doesn’t sound bad, remember that these lighters are generally 50-70 years old. I’ve never needed to replace the cotton/rayon wadding. Sure Navy sailors would buy them, a lot of them smoked, or they were gifted to Navy personnel by the shop as a thank you, or encouragement to purchase there in the future, but it has nothing to do with their unit. From the antique store, it was stalls and the person who owns the stall isn't there. Put in a new flint and lighter fluid, it was ready to go. I got this vintage lighter at an antique store. I'd be interested in thoughts from more experienced users of this method before I go dunking pen parts. So this is a 2 parter. I also read that Coleman fuel (of which I have plenty) is colloquially called white gas but that it is essentially naphtha. Ron - are you still using old bottles/old formula or have you successfully switched to the new formula? Or are you just buying a quart/gallon of naphtha from a paint store? Other brand? Do you use the VM&P Naphtha? After returning home and doing a little searching on-line, I find that Zippo bought Ronson in 2010 and changed the formula so that it no longer contains naphtha. Well the new bottle (which I ended up leaving on the shelf at the store) said nothing about containing naphtha. I've got an old can of Ronsonol here that clearly states that it contains naphtha, but as it is old, and the fluid level is low, I stopped by the local drugstore to grab a new bottle.

On the advice of Ron Zorn ( not throwing you under the bus here, Ron), I was going to try and loosen a cap jewel with some application of naphtha in the form of Ronsonol lighter fluid.
